How to get designer window treatments

Whether you move to a new home, or you simply want a change of scenery - it’s no secret that your window treatments have a major role in the ambiance of a room. Infact, a window treatment has the power to make or break a room. So, how do you know if your selection is perfect or misplaced? We put together some of our go-to do’s and don’ts to help you sort out the basics when creating your space.

Hang drapes up high

DO: Aim High When Hanging Drapes

Hanging drapes high and wide will give your space a more luxurious, bigger look. Go for about 12 inches above the window frame, or even all the way to the ceiling, while extending the drape rod three to six inches on each side.

DON’T: Crowd The Window Frame

Never set your drape rod to rest right above the window frame. This will result in less light in the room, as well as a stunted, cramped look, with possibly awkward space left open around the frame.  Be sure to give room on each side of the frame by limiting the drapes to two inches inside each side when open.

DO: Layer Window Treatments

Mix and match window treatments like the top designers. Rarely are designer-worthy windows limited to one treatment. Let yourself get creative! Whether you’re matching drapes with shades, or adding a stylish valance to your blinds, layering your window treatments will give a complete, rounded appearance to your masterpiece.

DON’T: Go Crazy And Add Everything

Too much of anything is usually a bad thing, and window treatments are no exception. The more you add, the less light will shine through, creating a smaller, closed in feel to your room.

Drapes touch the floor

DO: Let Drapes Reach The Floor

Floor length drapes are ideal. Be sure to measure your space before purchasing your drapes to ensure a perfect fit. Anything from a half-inch hover above the floor, to a slight puddle towards the bottom, is right for the best look.

DON’T: Cut Them Short

Drapes that stop at the windowsill just don’t work. It creates an awkward, weird, chopped up feel to the room. Repeat after us: measurement is your friend.

DO: Try Wide Slat Blinds or Shutters

Add flare to your home by changing it up with wide slat blinds or shutters - creating a whole different style to your room. Wide slats are usually more of a focal point, so go for the ones that may cost a bit more upfront (i.e. wood or faux wood), but look more upscale, especially when matched with the architecture of your home.

Wide Slat Blinds

 DON’T: Buy Cheap Blinds

It may be tempting, but you’ll pay in the long run. Plastic blinds break and discolor easy, making it especially difficult for anyone who has kids or pets. One mishap, and the overall attractiveness of the room is compromised.

DO: Use Different Window Treatments Throughout Your Home

Treat each room as its own separate domain. Every space is different, and what may work in one room, may not work in another. Some rooms require more light, some may need more insulation. Decorate and style each room according to its function, and have fun with all the different options.

DON’T: Clone Each Window

One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to window treatments. Don’t try to make the cafe shutters that may work in the kitchen, fit your large living room windows. Each room has different requirements and needs for their own unique space.
