SOS- Clean my honeycombs!

Yes, honeycomb (or cellular) shades are very popular in Indianapolis. And that means there are lots of households that need to know how to clean them, too.

Problem 1- Ew, bugs!

Yes, bugs could crawl into your cells. It’s an easy fix. Take a can of compressed air and blow through the cell, pushing that critter out. A hairdryer on a cool setting works too.

Problem 2- I didn’t order grey honeycombs?

Everything, including your shades, will get dusty from time to time. Take the vacuum hose attachment and cover the end with pantyhose or a light sock. Then run it over the fabric, starting at the top, from side to side.  (in the direction of the folds in your shade).  If fluffy likes to curl up in the window sill, you can also use a lint roller to remove pet hair.

Problem 3- What’s that spot?

You can spot clean these with a light mix of dish soap and water. Blot, don’t rub. Let the spot dry and then pull them up to retrain the fabric into its folds.

Window Treatments Could Lower Your Energy Bills

Beautify your windows, keep your home comfortable and reduce energy use all at once with the right covering.

Homeowners often chose their window fashions for beauty rather than function. But, when you work with Budget Blinds of North Indianapolis, we can help show you how to combine the right materials with the right look to help lower your monthly energy bills.

Honeycomb Shades
Shades are the simplest and most effective way to make a difference in thermal energy savings. These designs are called honeycomb because they create small air cells between you and the window. This can give an R-Factor range from 3-5 in additional coverage.  Fabric choices can vary from contemporary patterns in light filtering fabrics to blackout material that even a teenager will approve (when he wakes up.)

Shutters or Wood Blinds
Real wood products help reduce solar heat gain while maintaining desired light, ventilation and privacy. When closed and lowered on a sunny window, reflective blinds or shutters  (white or near white) may reduce heat gain up to 45%. In winter months, these same blinds help add an R-Factor of 2 to 3.5 to your window.

Drapes or Roman Shades
Depending on fabric weight and color, fabric treatments of drapery or romans help protect your space from heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter.  This is especially noticeable in older homes where drapery can help block drafts.

Hang drapes well above and to the sides of the trim and down to the floor and position them as close to the window as possible for maximum energy effect and great designer impact. Thermal or other heavy liners (backing that is not seen from the room) help add more weight and efficiency as well.
